There are only a couple of years between these two pictures. They both mean a lot to me because, even though they show the same person, our world has completely changed. And I’m grateful to experience both sides of life🙏🏽

The first picture was taken on a raft in Sweden at @naturbyherden . Marie and I spent a weekend in a cabin without running water or electricity. We cooked over an open fire and bathed in the clear forest lake🥹

In the second picture, we’re no longer just two. Asta was barely two months old, and we had our hands full. The idyllic Italian setting clashed with a crying baby who refused to sleep during the day🫠😭

But the woman remains the same. And she has always been truly amazing—not just as a partner, but also as a mother. Even in the toughest moments, she has my back. Parenthood is only just starting to feel fun and enjoyable❤️

For some, the unconditional joy and love of being a parent hit instantly. For me, it took almost five months. And that’s okay too.

I clearly remember the black beach in Iceland. It’s as amazing as everyone says, but...

When we arrived in our little jeep, the beachside parking lot was filled with cars, selfie-loving influencers, and perhaps worst of all, crammed tour buses😑

“Oh no”, we thought as we went down to the beach. And quite rightly so. The beach was packed with people. Just not to the right. Everyone followed the current and stood like herring in a barrel to look at a certain rock formation, some birds and the water on the left. On the other hand, if you went to the right, the entire beach was empty. Not a single one. Not one!

The moral: Go the other way. Just once in a while🙏🏽#photography #travel #iceland #roadtrip #artic #icelandtrip #icelandnature #naturelovers

Kilimanjaro is 5,895 meters tall. It is also the highest free-standing mountain🏔️

The first ascent already happened more than 100 years ago, when the German geologist Hans Meyer reached the top in 1889. Since then, thousands have tried to get to the top. And even tho’ the mountain is not technically difficult, about half must turn around. Why? Probably due to altitude sickness🤮

Our trip was also plagued by altitude sickness. Marie in particular was having a hard time, and on the last night it was completely horrible. But we made it! We did the trek in 6 days, which we were proud of😇 It pales in comparison when you know that the fastest ascent and descent was made by the Swiss Karl Egloff in 6 hours 42 minutes in 2014🫠

From the peaks to the deep sea💧🦈

We stayed on an old wooden ship and got a unique opportunity to experience the Maldives far from the touristy resorts. We were accompanied representatives from the Maldivian whale shark research program.

We learned about marine life and had to assist in tracking whale sharks in the area. The whale shark’s dots are like our fingerprints, so by counting the dots, we got an idea of which one we had seen🐳 #whaleshark #wildlife #photography #wildlifeart #photooftheday #whalesharkwatching #wildlifephotography #wildlifephotographer

From the warm and elongated savannahs to Africa’s highest point. We’ve been around. And the trip to the top of Kilimanjaro was definitely one of the hardest trips Marie and I have tried together. Some people almost saunter to the top, others are scraping by. I think we were in the middle. It was hard, but absolutely wonderful⛰️

The pictures are from our camp high above the clouds, where I am especially in my element. The cold. We met many people on the way to the top, but the ones who made the biggest impression were the hundreds of porters who go up and down the mountainside every year without insurance, proper shoes or good living conditions. It is tough, and yet several of them believe that it is better to have a job than not at all. Because Tanzania is poor. And even if they risk life and limb, they can help feed the family.

Perhaps few would think of vultures. The somewhat unfortunate truth for some is that vultures and humans share quite a bit in common regarding central aspects of life.

For example, vultures often form strong pair bonds and are known to be monogamous — they typically mate for life🖤

Vultures also often rely on cooperation to find food. They circle in groups, looking out for food🍴

Here’s a thought💭🦁

Why do we fear lions so much? Most of us have never seen a lion in the wild, and they certainly don’t live in our neighborhoods. Yet, we wander around with our heads buried in our phones and headphones on, in the midst of bustling traffic in the world’s major cities. I’d venture to say that the risk of being hit by a car is far greater than the chance of encountering a lion🛻

The interesting part here isn’t the car or the lion itself, but the fact that our brains still cling to the idea that, evolutionarily, we should fear lions, large reptiles, and massive elephants. It says something about how fast technology developments, and how our brains aren’t quite keeping up.

Just a random thought for a Monday.

The picture was taken in Tarangire National Park in Tanzania. We had the pleasure of travelling on søa private tour with @africatours . We had driven around for a couple of days and only seen a few lions from a distance. On our last day we were rolling down a gravel road, and, as if straight out of The Lion King, a pride of lionesses lay on a few rocks, gazing out over the horizon🎥🔥

I want to start this photo series with a picture of a very special person🥹 At least, for me. It’s definitely a cliché when I say that these journeys are only possible because of her. But they are. And that’s why she deserves to be highlighted, because it’s with her that I’ve had the privilege of experiencing, documenting, feeling, and learning about nature and wildlife around the world🌍🎥

This photo was taken near Hanson Island in British Columbia, where we got incredibly close to the wildlife from our kayak. Hanson Island is a hidden gem in Johnstone Strait near Vancouver Island – a paradise for marine life and those of us who love it🐳

What you might not know is that the island is home to @orcalabbc, a research center that listens to orcas without disturbing them. Hydrophones are used underwater to capture the sounds of their songs and unique “dialects,” which orca families use to communicate with each other. Over the years, OrcaLab has revealed the social structures of these incredible animals and shared stories about the ocean’s most intelligent creatures in a sustainable way🌍💧

There isn’t much art on the channel at the moment because there’s so much else going on. We are facing a potential move and therefore countless viewings. At the same time, we have become parents and need to get to know each other and Asta❤️🙏🏽

I long for the life before having children, even though it also brings many new joys. It dawned on me that I have countless photos that have inspired my works but never see the light of day themselves🫠🎥🌍 So, over the next while, I will be posting travel photos on the channel. For that is nature’s true art.

All photos are taken by me. I NEVER remove elements from the images, and I do not add things that shouldn’t be there. I think the world is incredibly beautiful as it is. It doesn’t need to be retouched.

Many artists and photographers are starting to implement artificial intelligence, removing elements and adding things to achieve the best compositions. It is a creative choice that I do not criticize in any way. I have simply chosen to do the opposite. My pictures are still edited, of course, so the colors and composition are nice, but all the elements in the image are captured in camera. #photography #wildlifephotography #wildlife #photography #naturephotography #travelphotography #wildlifelovers

I don’t think humans and wild animals should have anything to do with each other, but on the other hand, we know that humans don’t understand the extent of our actions unless we see it, hear about it, or “feel” it. Simply put, it’s about news value.

Trekking with gorillas illustrates the delicate balance between communication, goals, and means. As you can tell in the video we are close. VERY close to the beautiful animals.

I don’t think humans and wild animals should have anything to do with each other, but on the other hand, we know that humans don’t understand the extent of our actions unless we see it, hear about it, or “feel” it. Simply put, it’s about news value.

Life as an artist is certainly not just filled with creative, picturesque picture-perfect moments. On the contrary.

Most of the time is spent on everything surrounding a piece of work. Picking up materials, planning the artwork, sketching, recording the process, editing, social media, client communication, etc.

In other words: life as an artist is exactly like life in any other business. And just like in other businesses, there are good days and not-so-good days. When I hit a period with less flow - both creatively or financially - I remind myself that many of my works are hanging around with you all. And that makes me insanely happy!

What do you think when I say Uganda? Uganda is very different from what I had imagined. During my journey, I had the opportunity to tell the story of Derrick Seruwagi’s project. Derrick has started a farm in the hilly and forested landscape of Uganda, where he both helps the local community and replants some of Uganda’s native trees from the rainforests🌳🌴

Churchill called Uganda the Pearl of Africa, and although he referred to the country’s natural resources and minerals, it’s the nature, wildlife, and culture that I fell for🤩

What do you think when I say Uganda? Uganda is very different from what I had imagined. During my journey, I had the opportunity to tell the story of Derrick Seruwagi’s project. Derrick has started a farm in the hilly and forested landscape of Uganda, where he both helps the local community and replants some of Uganda’s native trees from the rainforests🌳🌴

Churchill called Uganda the Pearl of Africa, and although he referred to the country’s natural resources and minerals, it’s the nature, wildlife, and culture that I fell for🤩

Although an artwork has a finite end. An ending when the last drop of paint hits the canvas, it’s still a constant process. It’s never quite finished. Because when I look at an older piece, there are often several things I would do differently🎨

S.O.S is one of my best works. Yet, I made it more complicated than necessary. The strokes are small, time-consuming, and unnecessary. I could have saved time by blocking out with a broader brush and rougher strokes. The list goes on🐻‍❄️

So art is never quite finished. There is always something to learn.

I finally managed to reach the mountain gorillas’ home. Deep within the dark Ugandan rainforest, I encountered the gentle primates, who in many ways resemble us🥹

Many years ago, I painted this piece depicting a mountain gorilla, portraying their struggle against human-made challenges. That’s not what this post is about. Instead, I want to mention that there is progress. When visiting the gorillas, you contribute funds to various conservation programs. And it works. Since the 1960s, the number of born gorillas has increased. The same applies to a wide range of other endangered species around the world. Many of the people I met currently working to conserve gorillas were formerly loggers and poachers🦍🔫

If you wish to visit the mountain gorillas, here are three things you need to know:
1) Stay at community-based lodges where the local people benefits from the money you pay. I stayed at @buhoma_community_rest_camp and travelled with @mamaland_safaris
2) Go to Uganda. There are several countries where you can see these beautiful animals. Uganda is an excellent choice.

I once heard that the best ideas arise from venturing out into the world - interacting with different cultures, people, and nature. It must be said that this has been the case for this piece. The artwork is titled “Salmon Hunt” and measures 120x100 cm in oil and acrylic on linen canvas🎨

In late summer 2023, @marie.m.andersen and I traveled to the Canadian wilderness to learn about bears, salmon, and the people who live in harmony with nature. In the midst of the damp forest floor near a rushing river, we sat in silence, hoping that a bear would pass by to catch salmon. It was here that I got the idea for the artwork🐻

Salmon not only contend with hungry bears but also with man-made obstacles such as dams, polluted water, overfishing, and rising water temperatures. The fish are vital to the bears, and the bears are crucial to the forests as they spread nutrient-rich fertilizer deep into the woods and up the mountainsides as they move around. The artwork serves as a reminder that everything is interconnected.

What I wished I had known when I started painting realistic fur.

I had the idea that fur should be built up stroke by stroke. First, a solid-colored background on which I could build details. Meticulously working with each stroke in different shades.

Then I got wiser. Glazing! A transparent layer of a specific color, for example, creating the illusion of shadow. Still the same solid-colored background and the incredibly time-consuming work with each stroke.

But I’ve reached a point where realism doesn’t necessarily lie in each stroke but in the illusion of it. The background is no longer solid-colored but larger blocks of different shades, forming light and dark areas on the animal. Broad strokes with thick brushes giving the sense of direction in the fur. Only at the end, I sit down with the very thin sword liner and apply the final two or three layers.

It may seem trivial, but it still took me a long time to learn.

And salmon is vital for their survival, but when the fish population is threatened by human activity, it also affects the bears🐟 Their fertility is directly linked to the amount of food they get. BOULDRING is about the transformation of one of Earth’s oldest rainforests🌳

In the spring of 2023, @marie.m.andersen and I visited @borneorainforestlodge and @sukaurainforestlodge , where, after a long search, we encountered the deeply fascinating orangutans🦧🦧

From the river, we could see and feel the forest on both sides. And even though the forest felt thick and impenetrable, at times we were only 100 meters away from the roaring industry, whose sole purpose is to convert the rainforest into palm oil plantations.

An industry that puts pressure on biodiversity and forces animals like the orangutan to flee. At present, it is estimated that the world’s palm oil plantations cover an area six times larger than Denmark. Bouldring is about the loss of the orangutans’ natural habitat🪚🌳

From the river, we could see and feel the forest on both sides. And even though the forest felt thick and impenetrable, at times we were only 100 meters away from the roaring industry, whose sole purpose is to convert the rainforest into palm oil plantations.

An industry that puts pressure on biodiversity and forces animals like the orangutan to flee. At present, it is estimated that the world’s palm oil plantations cover an area six times larger than Denmark. Bouldring is about the loss of the orangutans’ natural habitat🪚🌳

In March, we traveled with @wetravel.dk to Borneo. It exceeded our wildest fantasies. The piece is inspired by our visit to @sepilokorangutan center, which works with orphaned orangutans. Orangutans are under pressure, both because the old rainforests are being cut down, and because they are traded on the black market.

How would you describe yourself?

I was asked this question by three students from KEA who were looking for a person with a passion to interview. That person turned out to be me! However, I actually found it quite challenging to put it into words, as the creative industry is less rigid in its job titles. At the same time, the title of ‘artist’ is not a protected one. So, it quickly becomes a matter of personal judgment, and I am evidently not very good at assessing myself and my profession.

Throughout December, I will be sharing snippets from the short interview where I attempt to articulate the origins of my interest in art, wildlife, and nature. These are not questions I regularly ponder, but it’s probably quite healthy to reflect on them from time to time. I also hope that you will gain insights along the way.

One of my favorite musical pieces by Philip Glass from the movie The Truman Show. A film that remains relevant and interesting even 25 years after its premiere🎹

The bison may be a bit aged, but I tend to revisit the work. I’m not entirely sure why, but there’s something captivating about its deep brown eyes. Perhaps it’s also because I lost my grandfather the same year, and I still deeply miss him🎨

The population of whale sharks has decreased. But why?

A paper published in PNAS tells how a team of researchers, between 2005 and 2019, equipped 348 whale sharks with transmitters that could reveal the animals’ journeys across continents. At the same time, they tracked all major shipping routes with massive container ships that were hundreds of meters long.

The result? A significant portion of the whale sharks crossed paths with these large tankers. Were they hit by the ships? That’s what the researchers believe, although the conclusion is not definitive.

So, in less than a month, @marie.m.andersen and I will be heading to the Maldives, where, under the expert guidance of researchers from MWSRP (Maldives Whale Shark Research Programme), we will gain insight into the graceful giants’ movements and challenges. And perhaps an understanding of how marine life in one place is interconnected with what happens in Danish waters.
